Poppy seeds are an top note to lead with, and Sakura commits to them fully alongside almond and ambrette rather than reaching for cherry blossom clichés its name might suggest. Poppy seeds, almond and ambrette introduce the composition with a nutty, slightly musky softness rather than the pink floral brightness the name implies. Iris, violet and luscious fig carry the heart, powdery and fruity, taking the fragrance in a considerably more textured direction than its name suggests. Tonka bean, barley and white musks close the base, warm and grainy, finishing on a comforting, almost bread-like note rarely found in mainstream perfumes. Woody floral with gourmand undertones suits this fragrance well, versatile enough for daytime wear across most of the year. Sakura Perfume suits office settings, casual outings and quiet evenings about equally comfortably. Its barley note is a rare inclusion in mainstream perfumery, giving the base a doughy warmth unlike almost anything else in this catalog. The fruity floral top reads best through spring, while the tonka and barley base carries it comfortably into cooler months. A fragrance called Sakura that skips cherry blossom entirely and reaches for barley instead is a strange, interesting choice, and it mostly pays off.
