Why Perfume May Irritate Sensitive Skin
Perfume usually contains aromatic materials, solvents, and supporting ingredients. Alcohol helps scent disperse and dry quickly, but it can sting or irritate already-irritated skin. Fragrance compounds may also cause irritant contact dermatitis or allergic contact dermatitis. Signs can include redness, itching, swelling, flaking, or a rash. Fragrance is a recognized cause of contact dermatitis, and even products described as natural may contain ingredients capable of causing a reaction.
Irritation and allergy are different. Irritation happens when a product overwhelms the skin barrier. An allergy involves an immune response to a specific ingredient. Recurring or severe reactions deserve medical attention.
