Nearly a decade before Acqua Di Gio, this fragrance was already staking out aquatic territory: one of the true pioneers of the category rather than a follower of a trend Armani gets more credit for popularizing. Seven materials crowd the top alone (sea water, lavender, mint, green notes, rosemary, calone and coriander), an dense, herbal-aquatic opening for a fragrance released back in 1988. Woody and floral, the heart develops through sandalwood, neroli, geranium and jasmine, softening that aquatic sharpness into something more classically structured. Warm and earthy, the base closes on musk, oakmoss, cedar, tobacco and ambergris, giving Cool Water considerably more depth in its finish than most modern aquatics attempt. Aromatic aquatic is the technical classification, versatile enough for nearly any daytime occasion across most of the year. Cool Water Cologne performs well in spring and summer, when that marine-herbal opening feels most seasonally appropriate, though the tobacco-oakmoss base extends its range into cooler months too. The tobacco note in the base is a distinctly vintage touch most contemporary aquatics have abandoned in favor of clean musk and ambroxan alone. Nearly four decades after release, this remains a reasonable reference point for the entire aquatic category: arguably a more foundational one than the fragrance most people credit with starting it.
